Terry Goddard II receives inaugural Nonprofit Leadership Award

May 13, 2013 by admin

IMG_7631Terry Goddard II, Executive Director of Alliance for Housing and Healing, has won an inaugural annual Nonprofit Leadership Impact Award. This prestigious honor is presented by Edison International in cooperation with the Center for Nonprofit Management and includes a $5,000 grant to Alliance for Housing and Healing.

The Nonprofit Leadership Impact Award recognizes Terry’s leadership and in particular his hard work during the 2006-2009 merger of Aid for AIDS and the Serra Project – a difficult task that resulted in a more efficient nonprofit that provides a full spectrum of housing and supportive services to those who are suffering with poverty and HIV/AIDS.

”It has been a gift to lead Alliance for Housing and Healing as it evolves into an organization that truly meets the challenging needs of our clients. They are the reason we do our work with such conviction,” says Goddard II. “I am also proud to work with an incredible team of case workers, fundraisers, support staff, and managers that make everyday a joy. And, of course, our board of directors includes true visionaries and philanthropic leaders.”

Terry received the award at a ceremony on Friday, May 10, as part of the Center for Nonprofit Management’s 501(c)onference and shares this honor with three other deserving nonprofit executives who have also made a meaningful difference in the progress of their programs and the success of their communities.

A Faire of the Heart 2013

May 1, 2013 by admin

IMG_7055On April 9th, the Beverly Hills Hotel was transformed into Studio 54 when Disco Queen Maxine Nightingale hit the stage and was joined by the more adventurous guests at the A Faire of the Heart gala. The dancing at the end of the evening capped off a memorable night that celebrated the extraordinary accomplishments of Cloris Leachman, Dr. Phillip Musikanth, and Laurie Hasencamp, Esq. In a room filled with friends, family, and fans, these honorees received standing ovations for their work to promote equality, housing rights, and health.

Hal Sparks was a brilliant Master of Ceremonies who smoothly steered the evening from the most heartfelt moments – a speech by one of our clients – to the hilarious – Cloris Leachman stuffing her glass award into her dress.

The event was a financial success thanks to the tireless efforts of our wonderful Event Committee led by Warren Wimmer and Dave Walsh.

Thank you to everyone who supported A Faire of the Heart 2013 including our generous sponsors!

Funder Spotlight: Union Pacific Foundation

May 1, 2013 by admin

Union PacificAlliance for Housing and Healing received a genrous Health and Human Services grant from the Union Pacific Foundation.

Union Pacific Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Union Pacific Corporation and Union Pacific Railroad. Union Pacific believes that the quality of life in the communities in which its employees live and work is an integral part of its own success. Originally created as the Union Pacific Railroad Foundation in Omaha. NE, the Foundation has distributed funds since 1959 to qualified organizations in communities served by Union Pacific. The Foundation is not endowed, but is funded each year from the operating profits of Union Pacific Corporation.

Standing apart from funders who focus primarily on support for different programs, the Union Pacific Foundation has a strong interest in promoting organizational effectiveness among nonprofits. To that end, the Foundation dedicates the majority of its grants to help nonprofit organizations build their capacity, increase their impact, and operate more efficiently and effectively. We are immensely grateful to the Union Pacific Foundation for recognizing that general operating support is often what keeps doors open and vital programs in place.

Union Pacific Director of Public Affairs

Funder Spotlight: Pacific Life Foundation

May 1, 2013 by admin

Pacific Life 3Thanks for the hat trick, Pacific Life Foundation! For the third year in a row, Pacific Life Foundation has made a generous grant to Alliance for Housing and Healing to provide short-term housing assistance.

Pacific Life has long recognized the importance of helping communities where its employees live and work, predominately in the greater Orange County, California area and Omaha, Nebraska. Since 1984, the Foundation has provided thousands of grants to nonprofit agencies that focus on supporting the areas of arts and culture; community and environment; education; and health and human services.
To celebrate the generosity of the Pacific Life Foundation and thank the decision makers in person, Linda Forman, Grants Manager, attended the reception on January 25th at Pacific Life’s headquarters in Newport Beach. It was a truly festive occasion as more than 150 nonprofits who do tremendous work throughout Southern California accepted over $1.5 million in grants.

Client Profile: Derek

May 1, 2013 by admin

DerekNext year I want to visit Brazil,” he said with such hope and conviction that he made me believe it too. Yes, with a little more time and a lot of healing, I know Derek can leave Soldano House and return to his life that includes extensive travel and exciting adventures.

But for now, Derek is desperately fighting to recover from PCP, a severe lung infection that affects many whose immune systems are badly compromised by HIV.
Emaciated and weak, Derek arrived at Soldano House in June after spending nearly two months in the hospital with a collapsed lung. He needed the 24/7 care that is so lovingly provided by the on-site Certified Nursing Assistants and the time to recuperate in a safe place where he is assured a roof over his head and three meals a day.
Derek never imagined himself in a place like this, “Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and wonder where I am.” After spending 25 years abroad, perhaps it is not surprising that Derek is still trying to discover what home is. At 56, Derek’s passport is filled with stamps from England, Spain, Sweden, and other places where he found work as an industrial designer and interior architect. His career abroad started when Ford sent him to London in 1982 to work on the Lincoln Continental Signature Series. Thanks to Derek’s team, the seats in this luxury car were more comfortable and the instrument panel more accessible.
For now though, when he finds the strength, his travels are local and less luxurious. Derek takes public transportation to explore the area around Soldano House in Long Beach. “I like the art museums and I found a Spanish restaurant that reminds me of me years traveling.”
But most of his days are spent short of breath between bouts of coughing. Derek is working with his doctors to find medications that allow him to live as normal a life as possible and to continue to dream of returning to an active life.
Derek is just one of the more than 2,200 people Alliance for Housing and Healing has served this year. From 2011-2012, AHH has provided:
