2022 Paul Andrew Starke Warrior Awardee Warren Wimmer

Alliance for Housing and Healing is proud to announce that Warren R. Wimmer has been recognized with West Hollywood’s Paul Starke Warrior Award for 2023. Warren is a former Board member of Alliance for Housing and Healing, and its predecessor, The Serra Project.

Warren joined The Serra Project in 2003, and continued serving on the Board after The Serra Project merged with Aid for AIDS in 2009 to become Alliance for Housing and Healing. He served as Board President from 2012 to 2019 before retiring from the Board in 2021. During his long tenure on the Board, Warren demonstrated a deep commitment to serving persons with HIV, using his abilities, resources, and energy to help grow Alliance into the leading provider of housing and directly related support services to people living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County. Alliance for Housing and Healing is profoundly grateful for his contributions to our agency and community, and for the opportunity to work with this kind, generous, and dedicated person in the fight against HIV and homelessness.

2021 Paul Andrew Starke Warrior Awardee Anil Patel

April 6, 2022 by admin

Alliance for Housing and Healing is proud to highlight Anil Patel, one of the 2021 Honorees for the Paul Andrew Starke Warrior Award. For the past 13 years, Anil has been an integral part of the annual Best in Drag Show fundraiser. Not only has Anil (in the guise of his drag persona Chanelta) been part of the show, he has also consistently sold more tickets to the event than anyone else. Each year he has worked tirelessly to ensure a sold-out theater for the event. In addition, Anil has said “yes” to every request for help, no matter what the task. Each year, he assists with stuffing envelopes to send to potential supporters. He helps raise awareness for Best in Drag Show and Alliance by doing calendar photo shoots and appearing in Pride Parades. He is a fierce and fabulous brand ambassador for the show and is its most vocal cheerleader. The impact he has had on the event, and subsequently on the Alliance clients who benefit from the funds raised, cannot be overstated. Over the years Anil has dedicated countless hours to the Best in Drag Show event, and he’s not finished yet!

Best in Drag Show 2022 Postponed to October

March 31, 2022 by admin

The Best in Drag Show, originally set to take place on April 3, 2022 will be postponed to now take place in October 2022. The new date will be announced soon. More:

The COVID pandemic has upended a lot over the past two years. Even now as the Omicron surge is waning, we are still feeling the effects of uncertainty. Understandably, some of you are not quite ready to return to indoor events of this size.

In order to give everyone the opportunity to attend the show and feel completely safe doing so, we have decided to postpone the event. The energy and enthusiastic participation of the audience is what makes Best in Drag Show so special, and we want you all to be able to be a part of it in-person!

The upside of this postponement is that the rescheduled event will take place in October, when the event has traditionally taken place. The new date will be announced in the coming weeks.

Best in Drag Show is an integral part of Alliance’s funding raising efforts each year, and we have always counted on your support to make it such an incredibly successful event.

If you have already purchased tickets, you can keep your seats for the rescheduled show. However, if you prefer, we will be more than happy to refund your entire purchase. Please contact Brian Sharp, bsharp@alliancehh.org if you wish to initiate that process. We will print and mail new tickets to the show closer to the rescheduled event date. There is no need to hang on to the tickets you may have received already.

Lastly, we want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who has been working so hard to bring this show together. For over 30 years, Best in Drag Show has been a labor of love. To all the cast, crew and volunteers involved in this year’s production, we truly appreciate your hard work and dedication and are inspired by your passion. We are so excited for people to see the show you’re creating!

Thank you, as always, for your support of Best in Drag Show and the Alliance for Housing and Healing.

Guilty

April 21, 2021 by admin

We stand in solidarity with our new APLA Health partners:

While today’s verdict may seem like justice, it is not. Justice would have been George Floyd never dying in the first place. “It has been less than a year since the life of Mr. Floyd was ended beneath former police officer Derek Chauvin’s knee over 9 minutes and 29 seconds while in Minneapolis police custody. Mr. Floyd’s death rightfully sparked national outrage over police brutality and systemic racism." said Craig E. Thompson, CEO of APLA Health. “Racism continues to be the public health issue of our time. There is no question that the number of police killings of civilians in the U.S. – who are disproportionately Black and other people of color – are the result of policies and practices that enable and even encourage police violence. APLA Health refuses to believe in a future that continues to allow this to happen. We demand Federal
and State common-sense legislation that will combat police misconduct, excessive force, and racial bias in policing. For police officers to have the credibility to effectively do their jobs, they have to be accountable. No one should wake up and wonder if today is the day that they or a loved one dies at the hands of police.”
